The Portland Public School board recently voted to prohibit textbooks or classroom materials questioning the mainstream thinking about climate change.

The decision has sparked an outpouring of commentary, with many writers supportive of the School Board.

However, the wording of the Board resolution should greatly concern parents of Portland public school students. Resolution No. 5272 is two pages long, but the most chilling part is the final sentence:

“[Portland Public Schools] will abandon the use of any adopted text material that is found to express doubt about the severity of the climate crisis or its root in human activities.”

The primary purpose of education is to teach students how to be critical thinkers. Now that the School Board has declared that expressions of doubt about complex scientific topics will be banned, what is the point of going to school?

Regardless of the subject we should encourage students to be skeptical. The more questioning, the better. They will be poorly prepared for adult living if they spend their childhood years being spoon-fed in schools where skepticism is prohibited.

Public education already faces a growing challenge from private schools, online learning, and home-based education. If Resolution 5272 is upheld, Portland Public Schools will give parents one more reason to leave.

  1. There is no scientific doubt about the origins of modern climate change — it’s due to man. Or that its rate of increase is rapid, compared to past episodes of climate change.

Why do you want to misinform students?

    1. There is always room, in science, for doubt. This is the source of progress. The science is never settled, but open to honest inquiry and alternative hypotheses to be tested.

    2. If only there was an animal or something that used or needed CO2. And maybe it even was turned into a different by-product like say oxygen Or even it caused it to grow bigger and have greater benefits.

Carbon dioxide fertilization greening Earth, study finds
      April 26, 2016
      NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center
From a quarter to half of Earth’s vegetated lands has shown significant greening over the last 35 years largely due to rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, according to a new study.

“An international team of 32 authors from 24 institutions in eight countries led the effort, which involved using satellite data from NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer instruments to help determine the leaf area index, or amount of leaf cover, over the planet’s vegetated regions.”

If you want to talk about the “Loss of Ice” on the planet, I am Ready. I just bought a new box of “Climate Stable” Crayons foto explain it to you.

    3. The article doesn’t say that. It simply says “we should encourage students to be skeptical”, and “be critical thinkers”. That should apply to any topic.

    4. WOW, Mr Appell is either a very sarcastic fellow or he is extremely poorly informed.
Among professionals who are not being paid to promote the fraud there is very little belief that human activities influence the climate very much at all. Current science is strongly suggesting not only a pause in our wonderful warm times but a beginning of their end and a return to colder days.
The kind of current real science Mr Appell would ban.
Anyone who says the science is settled on any topic is anti-science

  2. The primary purpose of education is evolving to teach students how to be uncritical thinkers. Those in charge of an educational monopoly are unable to resist the idea of indoctrination. They will, of course, fail in this effort.

  3. The Burning of the Books in Nazi Germany, 1933, is the Portland school system following in his foot steps. You people should be fired!

  4. Propaganda is most effective when applied to the minds of children — the effects can last throughout adulthood (and into future ballot boxes). This forms the basis of the fight for control over public schools and their curriculum:. Get the minds of the kids at all costs. One way of neutralizing this ugly force is to switch to a voucher system, where parents could send their kids to schools with curriculum and philosophy of their choice. Or, at least, have the school board and teachers more influenced by their patrons thinking/beliefs rather than the current, prevailing political victors. I mean, to put it bluntly, I believe it should remain the right of a parent to brainwash their child to their way of thinking and believing, and believe it repugnant to give government the same right to do so.

  5. Here is an example of why people must question global warming claims.
A Central Oregon activist group, LandWatch, commissioned a study that purports to show global warming will diminish future stream flows and reduce Bend’s surface water supply. A detailed review of the study deemed the diminished flow claim invalid. The study is so flawed and its conclusions misleading that the authors, professional geologists, should be cited for malpractice. Licensed professionals must meet rigid standards of ethics, honesty, integrity, fairness, personal honor and professional conduct. Because the authors failed to uphold these standards, they have been reported to the state licensing board; their study is now under review.

  6. Board member Rosen who introduced and pushed this restriction in diverse opinion is in the Eco-learning business or this is his aspiration anyways (i.e. another move by a government official with a direct and/or indirect conflict of interest). These and other progressive agendas with increasing adoption by our government is discouraging. God given rights is fading fast, and rights-only-granted-by-government is taking over our individual lives. Very sad.

  7. This appears to be another government/liberal attempt at controlling the public. What better way than to control the kids early…

  8. very sloppy attempts at what passes for ‘logic’ amongst the fascists, apparently – but climate change is real, despite the koch-boyz and their not so hidden and very profitable agendas.
