Since the state of Washington is not apparently participating in the replacement of the I-5 Bridges, I assume we will also have to police the new bridge to be sure no vehicles with Washington licenses are allowed to cross.

Great article, Ms. Hickok. I expect that every Oregon taxpayer will be called upon to help pay for the bridge, which includes much more than that. The bridge is old and may need replacing at some point but at present it serves and is paid for. Those are major merits that receive little respect from our legislators. $3.4 billion is a truly huge cost for taxpayers to bear, even when some of the cost is spread across two states. I think that most citizens simply don’t realize the magnitude of a million, less alone billions. The numbers blur, and become dismissible as mere incidentals.
Every Representative and Senator that voted for CRC should not be reelected in 2014. CRC design is flawed and should not be built? Why should Oregon taxpayers pay the full bill? With no information how the CRC is going to be payed for, the legislature abograted their responsiblilties to the taxpayers.

ODOT spends approx $5 billion per biennium on transportation related projects and programs, including a half-billion in debt service. The $27-32 million projected annually falls into this category, and is how large transportation infrastructure projects are financed. ODOT does not have authority to raise taxes, and must justify any raise in fees to the Legislature – so they would ultimately have to vote to approve increases. It’s disappointing to see CPI taking such a strong position against the CRC. CPI testified before the House Transportation Committee in 2011 in favor of congestion tolling, which is likely going to be a component of the project. This article fans the flames with vague promises of phantom tax hikes which are not in any way a part of the project. We need to govern on facts and data, not on paranoia.
