An excellent piece. The ideas are well understood by conservatives like myself, but you know how effective a “parable” can be…. Anyway, I would be curious about your thoughts on a closely related topic. One of the main concerns about foreign competition is the many countries where a much lower cost structure, particularly in regards to labor costs, is virtually automatic based on the economic conditions in those countries compared to our own. This is no longer confined to just unskilled labor type jobs. I have some sense of the economic factors that have made us vulnerable to this (such as inflation, or unions in some cases, etc.), but I am very curious to know if you think that there is some solution? Thank you.
Great story about the value of competition. Foreign competition and domestic competition are all about trying to win the favor of consumers with more attractive products and services. Let them compete for our business. It’s good for everyone.
As long as the wind is blowing in the same direction and at the same speed for all boats, and the sea is relatively flat, it sounds like fun.
Very nicely stated. And a wonderfully subtle point about how competition aids your ability to get better as well as motivating you to do so. I would love to see more competition in K-12 education. There is so little competition in education that really, no one even knows how it would work to improve outcomes.
