I am voting NO. It isn’t called dope for nothing. We shouldn’t recognize its legitimacy eventhough we probably should just let go of practical enforcement against it.
It is folly to state or believe that marijuana is a harmless drug. Today’s marijuana is a powerful intoxicant that bears little resemblance to the weed of 40 years ago. Marijuana is used in one way and one way only — to acheive a drug “high.” In that regard it differs sharply from alcohol. I am disappointed that the CPI seems to imply otherwise.
Before suggesting that legalized marijuana is such a fine and excellent idea, ask two questions:
First, will legalizing marijuana tend to make MORE, or LESS marijuana generally available? I know how I would answer that question but please be honest with yourself.
Second, if marijuana is such a harmless drug and would now be generally more available, how do you feel about more of that drug be available to minors, including your own children? Do you think that MORE marijuana will make their lives and futures better or worse?
Oregon has enough societial and economic problems already. Legalizing marijuana will not improve the ability to address those problems. That’s the bottom line.
