User fees for libraries is a terrible idea akin to taking the “free” out of public schools. Reading and information are valuable public goods that need to be encouraged. Well read and informed citizens are important and anything that diminishes that is bad. Fees would certainly cut down on the use of books and information.

User fees, especially small amounts, would consume a substantial part of the fee in just the collection. Besides the general good for the citizen libraries are a classic example of a good that is very expensive for an individual to buy but economic for the entire community by the “sharing” of these goods.

Wow, Richard’s comment above doesn’t sound like his normal take on things.

I myself hate being taxed for library services I hardly ever use. I find the public library provides poor service for me. The books I would want to check out are almost always checked out by others for months on end.

But this said my wife always has a trunk full of library books checked out. So, I guess we get our money’s worth. I hope the library tax district has a cap on its taxation capabilities because Multnomah county is such a collectivist county we would sure to get hit with stiff property tax increases by the library district.

One more reason to flee stump town.
